After having watched FIVE STEPS TO TYRANNY, which questions could we ask about language, power and thought? Please illustrate your questions with real life examples from the documentary. You are obviously welcome to respond to comments from other students and to offer additional examples from your own life to illustrate/contradict other points of view.

What happens to our morals and our beliefs on what is ethically right after strong propaganda? How does it manage to influence us to commit such brutal acts? (Such as the events in Rwanda)

This is a good question. Language obviously plays a big role in propaganda. Can you find examples of your own life where you have been swayed to think in a certain way through language?

I think the concept of regular individuals having the power to turn to evil, is quite an interesting one and we know that this has happened before, thinking back reviewing history, however, the question still remains whether or not this can be stopped and through what means would it take to secure world peace. If humans are able to turn a blind eye towards others in need, would there ever be world peace in the future?

Do you think it is helpful to be shown how such regimes work? Do you think that a better knowledge of how you can be manipulated through language and informal reasoning would stop you from taking part in unethical activities?

The public is constantly fooled and manipulated by politicians. We do in fact to some extent believe what they have to say even though deep down or from past experiences we know it's all just pretend.

Do people follow the commands of others that easily? An example from the documentary would be, inside the train where the man asked for the seat. 50% of the people, gave their seats to him, but when he brought on an official, 100% of the passengers on the train gave their seat to them, when they asked for it.

Should we not only teach knowledge for students but also things in life (how to distinguish good things and bad things)? From the socialogical experiment in the video that the teacher successfully creates a segregation between her blue eyed pupils and her brown eyed pupils,we can see that children are very insecure, vulnerable and easily manipulated.

How do our thoughts influence power? I feel like when we think something (such as assuring ourselves that we have control), we are creating more power for ourselves. I feel like this in turn is interpreted by others and can cause them to feel less powerful when they sense authority from someone else. As shown in the documentary when the experiment was done where a man dressed normally asks to take someone's train seat, and then does so again in a police officer uniform, I find it interesting how (sometimes without reason) when humans sense any type of authority they tend to take away authority from themselves as a reaction.

How much personal judgement is applied to knowledge supplied by those we call superior? For example, the children who fall under the illusion that blue eyes are superior to brown eyes- how much would they have considered the... illogical thought process leading to that conclusion? They have been associated with each other for at least a few weeks. If there were any correlations surely they would have noticed by then. Have they accepted that idea without further reasoning than it was a teacher delivering the concept (possibly how propaganda and Wikipedia receive so much trust at times)?

Language is one of the greatest liberators of thought and expression as it allows the freedom for the individual to give, take and share knowledge for all to understand and grow. However, the same language can also ensnare people under ambiguity and propaganda to which people may become blind or focused to see the bigger picture.

How does language influence power balance in society? Does education influence the power of language and it's effects? Language can be interpreted in different ways and have various underlying meanings, does this restrict people's freedom when used by government and major corporations?

How much power does language have over our thought? Can someone who cannot use language or understand it be affected , influenced and controlled by language? From the documentary I could see that young children who had not even fully developed their use of language and communication were easily manipulated and controlled and their thoughts were controlled to a certain extent causing them to welcome and practice segregation within the classroom. Does the level of language we possess have an affect on how easily we are manipulated?

Are people are willing to follow the requests to seem nice? Or does the way and the language you use to ask that request affect the outcomes?

To what extent does our language influence our thoughts ? As language may have diffrent meanings to diffrent people as to some others language may result in diffrent thoughts and ideas. An example could be in the loftus experiment a psychology experiment used to determine people's reliability with thoughts, as diffrent people are shown a video however when asked diffrent terms are used to ask the question, terms such as "crash" Hit" and "collide"this change in the wording of the question resulted in people changing their description of their memory of the event
